Austin, Texas, the live music capitol of the world, has many growing South Asian communities. 

Fortunately for Austin, this means lots of excellent live South Asian music. 

Borders divide us, music unites us, but this is music from Nepal, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, and places where the influence reaches. These tunes may include raga, tala, tabla, harmonium, saranghi, chitraveena, mridangam, surbahar, violin, tanpura, sitar, Qawwali, Hindustani, Carnatic styles, Indian Classical, and much more.  Central Texas is a great place to see live music, and is one of the best places in the country to see South Asian traditional live music. This didn't appear from out of thin air. 

It's only made possible by the dedicated people who volunteer, perform, organize and attend concerts. The scene is made possible by the musicians that teach lessons, the musicians that take the lessons and practice, the music fans that bring new friends to concerts in random venues all over the city, the artist who works up the courage to perform for the first time, the supportive friends and family, and by Austinites young and old that love this music and listen to it all the time. Hopefully this website can serve as a resource to help people find out more about Desi Music in Central Texas and to support the artists and organizers that make it possible. 

You can support Traditional South Asian Music in Austin by buying music directly from the artists, attending concerts or lessons in-person or remotely, donating to the non profits that organize concerts and bring musical talent to Central Texas.  In the Austin Area, San Antonio Area and everything in between we hope to see you interpreting this beautiful and ancient music yourself and sharing it with the community.
